How to Hire a Mover [Part 2]

Total Cost of the Move
We have placed this in the last position because that is the same position which I should hold in your mind. While the total estimated cost of your move should be a consideration to you, it should not be your primary consideration. After you have researched three or four moving companies, telephone each of them in order to arrange for an estimate. Any reputable mover will ask you a variety of detailed questions in order to give you as accurate an estimate is possible. Some of the questions which they should ask you are:
Q. Are there any special objects that you will be moving?
For example, will your grand piano fit through any of your new home's openings?
Q. How many stairs are there in your new home?
Many movers will charge extra for more than a set number of stairs in a home.
Q. Will they need to take an elevator?
This may slow down the move, thereby increasing the total number of hours the movers have to spend with you.
Q. Is there somewhere that they can conveniently park the moving van?
Many movers will charge more if they can not put the moving van within a certain distance of your front door.
Remember, a good moving company will ask you many questions in order to develop as detailed in estimate is possible.
Final Decisions and Warnings
Generally speaking, the more detailed the estimation process, the closer that your final cost will be to your original estimate. You should be aware that for many moving companies their original estimate is not a binding contract as to the final cost. Some unscrupulous movers will 'lowball' their estimates in the hopes of getting your business, and then increase it when the time comes to unload your furniture.
Remember that forewarned is forearmed. Your best defense again this unscrupulous mover is a recommendation from someone you trust who has used the company before. So before you hire your moving company, be sure to do all of your research and choose the moving company that's right for you.
