How to Hire a Mover [Part 1]

2006-06-12

Now that you have decided to definitely hire a moving company to help you, you have to begin the process of choosing one. As with all things in life, a bit of planning in this area will go a long way. Remember that these people will be transporting almost everything that you own, so be sure to think carefully when choosing a mover. Among the factors to be considered are:

Getting a Mover with a Good Reputation

Try to find a mover that one of your friends has used before and was happy with. All the written references in the world do not add up to one verbal recommendation from someone that you know. As well, check with the Better Business Bureau in your city to see whether any of the movers that you are considering have had complaints lodged against them. Simply having a complaint should not be the cause for dismissing the mover from your consideration. Instead, check and see how the mover dealt with whatever the problem was, and whether the resolution was satisfactory to all involved.

Full-service Move Versus Selected Services

If a company or corporation is paying for your move, you'll probably want to select a full-service option from your mover. These will often include everything from packing your goods and dismantling the furniture at your old house and unpacking and reassembling your furniture at your new home. It is of course, the most expensive form of moving services. More economical options involve you doing your own dismantling and boxing, with the mover simply loading and unloading the moving van. A recently created option involves a moving company dropping a storage unit at your home and it being loaded by yourself over a series of days. When you're finished the loading, the moving company will come and drive your goods to your new home.
