Auto Insurance After an Accident - Part 2

Back to Part 1 of Auto Insurance After an Accident

Aside from investigating the facts of the accident, insurance companies will assess the costs involved in repairing the damage to the vehicle, as well as the actual market value of the vehicle at the time of the accident. In the event that the total costs exceed the vehicle’s estimated running price at that time, then cash may be offered instead of having the vehicle serviced. A declaration of “loss” may then be made by the company instead of categorizing the vehicle as “damaged.”

Repair costs will have to be approved by the insurance company. Once the estimated amount is given the green light, then the car owner has the option to select which shop he wants to conduct repairs on his vehicle or to go with the one already associated with his insurance provider.

Consult with your claims handler regarding any charges that may be asked of you if the condition of the vehicle turns out to be significantly better than its state before the accident.

You can also ask your insurance provider or claims handler/adjuster about the different degrees of coverage, some of which may include perilous events (including accidents from natural occurrences such as hailstorms, lightning, falling objects, explosions etc.) and consider payment to the policyholder, no matter how fault is assigned or determined. The amount of deductibles, options that you chose to personally answer for upon purchase of the policy, will be subtracted from the amount that will be awarded to you.

Insurance companies are not obliged to provide replacement vehicles while the damaged unit is under repair. However, some policies also consider the necessity of having an alternate mode of transportation. Thus this option is made available to those who would want to add it to their plan.

Conduct some research on your state’s website to find out what type of support you can receive from the local or national government. They usually provide assistance to people seeking claims from their insurance providers, ensuring that the process is accomplished fairly.

It pays to be informed. Study your coverage plans early. Keep records of every transaction related to the accident. Be a safe driver at all times. That way, you’ll reduce road risks for other people and yourself.
