Back to part 1 of Adding Your Teen On Your Auto Insurance
A number of studies have indicated that teenagers are much more likely to be killed in car accidents than people of other age groups. Teenage males are much more likely to be killed than teenage females, and this is the reason why the insurance premiums will be higher for males. If you want to add your teen to your insurance policy, it may first be helpful to look at the alternatives before you make a decision. First, it may be helpful for you to enroll your teenager in a driving course to make sure they have the necessary skills that are needed for driving. Many insurance companies will give discounts to teenagers that can prove they took driving courses.
Many insurance companies will also give discounts to teenagers that have good grades in school. The reason for this is because a teenager who is responsible with their studies is much more likely to be responsible when driving than a teenager that is performing poorly in school. If your teen is getting good grades, this will tip the odds in the favor. If they are not getting good grades, tell them that you want them to bring home good grades before you will put them on your auto insurance. You will often find that this incentive will cause them to study harder. If you decide to buy a car for your teenager, you should avoid sports vehicles.
Insurance companies will look at the type of car your teen will be driving when they are calculating how high the premium will be. Brand new sports cars or luxury vehicles will have the highest premiums. Sport utility vehicles can be costly because they have a much higher chance of rolling over than cars or trucks. Don't allow you teenager to drive in the car with too many of their friends, as they are much more likely to get into accidents. Depending on the level of maturity your teen has, you may not want to let them drive at all. If they are not responsible with their chores or studies, it is unlikely that they will be responsible when driving in a vehicle. If this describes your teen, avoid putting them on your insurance until they can show you they are mature enough to handle it.
