Adding Your Teen On Your Auto Insurance
2006-09-09
If you want to add your teenager to your auto insurance, there are a number of things you will want to consider. First, insurance companies will look at the gender of your child. While it may double if a teenage female is placed on the plan, it will triple if a teenage male is added. If your teenager is like most people their age, they will be anxious to drive. However, few of them understand the responsibilities that are involved with operating a vehicle. The insurance companies know this, and this is why they are quick to raise premiums for teenage drivers.
If you decide to add you teenager to your auto insurance, you can save money by only allowing them to drive your older car. If you add them to the auto insurance for your new car, you will have to pay higher monthly premiums. Of course, this would require you to have more than one car, which most middle class families have these days. Placing your teenager on the insurance policy of the older vehicle can allow you to save hundreds of dollars each year. The biggest problem that most families face in a situation like this is the cost. Every insurance company knows that teenagers are much more likely to get into accidents than adults, and they must raise the cost of the premiums in order to protect themselves.
One way to solve this problem is to have your teenager get a part-time job to pay for the cost of the insurance. Most states don't allow teenagers to drive until they are 16 years of age, and this just happens to be the same year that most states will allow teenagers to work. Not only will you be able to save money by doing this, you will teach your child the importance of working hard in order to get something they want. Even if you have a high enough income to pay for the increased premium, having your teen work for it will teach them the importance of being responsible.
